McGOVERN/LOVE/KING/COURTNEY/McCONNELL
Mary LOVE (b. 15 Aug 1846-Scotland, d. 10 Oct 1881-Jeff. Co. Iowa) was the
grandmother of former Senator George McGovern. In ca. 1867, she married
Thomas McGOVERN (b. ca. 1845-England, d. ?). They had 6 children: Joseph C.
(b. 1868 PA, Sen. McGovern's father), Jennie (b. 1869 PA), Ellen (b. 1871
PA), Thomas (b. 1875 IL), Annie (b. 1877 IL), and George (b. 1879 IA).
Thomas probably met Mary in IL (Knox Co.) or PA about 1865 give or take a
few years, but the location of their marriage is unknown. When Mary died,
Thomas died shortly after, and the children went through extreme hardship.
The youngest son, George (b. 1879), was put up for adoption to a KING family
living near Des Moines; I believe this KING family came from Knox Co.
because there was a George KING and Kate McGOVERN who were married in Knox
Co. 1873, and later moved to Des Moines. Thomas McGOVERN (b. 1845) was the
eldest son of Joseph McGOVERN (b1818-Ireland, d. 1864-Knox Co., IL). Joseph
married Julia (Ann) COURTNEY and purchased a farm in the early 1850s near
Galesburg; his brother James McGOVERN (b. 1826-Ireland, d. 1913-Galesburg),
purchased adjacent farmland and by 1860 and these two McGOVERN families
lived side by side. When Joseph died, his wife remarried to a Peter
McCONNEL. If Kate (McGOVERN) KING was the daughter of Joseph McGOVERN and
Julia (Ann) COURTNEY (they had a daughter named Catherine, b. 1851), then
the mystery will be solved as to what happened to Senator George McGovern's
uncle George. Is there anyone who can help with any part of the following?
Thomas McGOVERN - Mary LOVE marriage (1867?, where?). Marriage of 'Kate'
McGOVERN and George KING (M. 1873). Parents of Kate McGOVERN (b. 1851?).
Death of Thomas McGOVERN (b. 1845). Death of George McGOVERN (b. 1879).

Christianer
I believe my g g grandfather's name was August Frederick Christianer, Sr. He
had a daughter, Jennie Belle, born in Abingdon, 10 May 1858. In 1904 he was
living at 1025 West 13th St. I do not know if that was Abingdon! He
mentioned in a letter that he was in Abingdon for 45 years so perhaps by
1904 he had already moved to be with his children in Iowa. He apparently was
City Clerk when Mr Trovilo was Mayor if that is of significance
chronologically. Also, he was a "school director" at one time.
